From Ladybirds and Bumblebees

Week 1

The Little Red Hen

Having learnt the oral story, The Little Red Hen complete with actions the children dived into lots of fun learning activities.

Children enjoyed buying and selling vegetables in the new role play area, a farm shop…

The Little Red Hen pictures were created using hand printing, a nice messy activity…

In the oral story, The Little Red Hen asked for lots of help from the other animals, to make bread. The children loved making bread, kneading it and watching in rise, before it was cooked and taken home to share with their families…

YUMMY, bread rolls.

Children working as a team to use the boxes in the Construction Area to build tractors…

Week 2

The Enormous Turnip

Having  shared the story of The Enormous Turnip with the children, they enjoyed getting stuck into lots of Turnip related activities.

One of the most popular activities was using the boxes in the Construction Area to build a crane. Children worked in teams to build a turnip pulling crane which the old man could use.

Look at this fantastic teamwork, what wonderful turnip cranes!

This week the children all worked in pairs in the Discovery Centre (ICT Suite) to sort fruit and vegetables, using different categories, they had chosen, such as; size, colour and type.

Week 3

Stone Soup

In the story this week the hen made the Bad Wolf  cut up a tree before he could eat the soup. The children loved having a go at using real saws…

The children also used salt, an important ingredient in soup, to write letters and numbers…

Week 5

Handa’s Surprise

As part of our learning about Handa’s Surprise the children enjoyed trying and rating different exotic fruits.

They completed many exciting activities, including choreographing a dragon dance and retelling the story of how the years got their names. The week ended with a lovely parent learning event, where the children and their parents made chinese dragons.

What wonderful teamship and resilience you must have shown throughout the week; first you made hens (that used to be one of my favourite story), then you made delicious bread rolls, then you built tractors, then a crane, after that you did a bit of ICT in the Discovery Centre, then you had a go with a REAL saw, then did some learning in salt and lots, lots more! Well done Ladybirds and Bumblebees!
I wonder what the Foundation Stage will do next?
