Houses and Homes

Recent learning and activities from our ‘Houses and Homes’ topic:

If you were one of the three little pigs where would you go shopping for materials to build your house? Well at B&Q of course!

Here is our B&Q roleplay area:

(Complete with B&Q aprons and baskets, kindly donated by Christchurch B&Q!)

Buying tools in B&Q…

Children had great fun building brick walls, using wet sand as cement…

“You mix water and sand to make cement”

Children built their own three little pig’s houses to keep them safe from the big bad wolf…

“Our den keeps away the big bad wolf!”

“We put the furry thing on the den so it was nice and snuggly and warm”

“We put up the signs to stop the big bad wolves from coming in to our den”

This week children had the very exciting task of making a cake, not just any cake, a cake in the shape of a house…

Wow doesn’t that cake look yummy!

Congratulations to the Provart Family, who won the cake as a raffle prize this week! We hope it was really tasty?

The children also tested out a new piece of equipment, our very own wireless headphones! These enable the children to listen to and join in with stories, rhymes and songs…

One of the buddies kindly recorded the story of ‘The 3 Little Pigs’ for our children to join in with.

Comments about the headphones:

“It was really good using the headphones”

“We heard the 3 little pigs”

“Really good because you can hear the story”

Children investigated ice this week and had a go at making their own igloos, they found it really interesting.

Whilst investigating the ice the children made the following comments:

“I want to see if it melts”

“It feels slippery and cold”

“The ice is melting because the sunshine is hot”

“It lights up in the sun”

    That’s brilliant!!

I love the B&Q role play area! It looks really lifelike. I bet all the little learners are thinking they’re in a real B&Q.
I think using wet sand as cement is a genius alternative!
The house some children constructed looks extremely secure: NO Big Bad Wolf wouldn’t be able to blow those houses down!!
